MITCH MCCONNELL TO STEP DOWN FROM LEADERSHIP, ANNOUNCES DATE: REPORT
Long-time party leader Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., announced plans this week to officially step down from his leadership position in the GOP, according to remarks obtained by the Associated Press on Wednesday.
McConnell, 82, reportedly said, “One of life’s most underappreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter.” He continued, “So I stand before you today … to say that this will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate.”

Effective in November 2024, McConnell will no longer serve in a leadership role, but he will continue representing Kentucky in the U.S. Senate, per CNBC. It is not clear if he will retire after his term ends in 2027.
The senator confirmed on X that this will be his last term as the Republican leader of the Senate.
