U.S. Military Is Underprepared for War With China, General Warns

Retired US General Jack Kean warned on Monday that the US military is not ready for war with China.

Although Taiwan considers itself independent, China claims it as its own. Diplomatic relations between China and the West, including the United States, have long been strained over this issue.

Last Friday, four-star Air Force General Mike Minihan said in a memo to his commanders that armed war between the United States and China could be possible by 2025. This will create intense tension between the world’s two most powerful militaries.

A spokesman for the Commander of Air Mobility confirmed the authenticity of the memo. The Defense Department said Minihan’s “comments are not representative of the Department’s views on China.”

Keen worried that, “A conflict like this could make the United States sick. The reality is that what we should focus on, is that we are not as prepared as we should be. We have no effective military deterrence in the region. China has more ships, more planes, and more missiles. The United States is there, our allies are involved.”

Qin cited a backlog of $19 billion in equipment scheduled to be shipped from the United States to Taiwan, which the island’s government has already paid for, that has yet to be shipped. He added that Congress should fix that system to ensure Taiwan would be ready to defend itself in the event of an attack.

He noted that “We have to help Taiwan, and we have to solve our own problems. That’s really what we should be focusing on. Let’s de-risk and be prepared, and that’s how we prevent war. We prevent war by being prepared.

Keane said they could be at war within a few years. The truth is, the general, me, and others, don’t really know that answer. And it’s a subjective analysis that leads you to a sort of conclusion. His, that battle is famous. Me, I don’t. It seems like it’s in the near future, but it’s definitely possible.”

On Sunday, Representative Michael McCaul, the Texas Republican who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said he fears Minihan is right.

“The job of the military is always to be ready for war, but in my view, the possibility of war with China is not diminishing right now. The reason? President Xi sees Russia’s defeat in Ukraine and possibly more. As a result, caution.”

He posted on Twitter, “The job of the military is always to be ready for war, but in my view, the possibility of war with China is not diminishing right now. Why? President Xi sees Russia’s defeat in Ukraine and likely more. Cautious as a result.”
