Trump’s Attorney Finally Gets Win Amid String of Embarrassments

Despite being chastised by multiple courts throughout the country, former President Donald Trump’s legal team won a victory in Wisconsin when a liberal-leaning state Supreme Court justice was advised to “avoid sarcasm” for statements she made toward a Trump lawyer.

The commission notified Karofsky in a letter dated November 17 that was released on Saturday by the Associated Press:

“Regardless of the nature of the case being addressed by the court, a judicial official should take special care and remain mindful of their role in proceedings as a neutral and detached magistrate, as opposed to an advocate, and avoid sarcasm when making statements from the bench, given their obligations under [the state code of judicial conduct].”

According to a judicial complaint released over the weekend, state Supreme Court Justice Jill Karofsky was chastised by a state judicial oversight panel after a retired Maryland attorney filed a complaint accusing Karofsky of being hostile to Trump lawyer Jim Troupis during the former president’s lawsuit to overturn more than 100,000 Wisconsin votes cast.

Despite reminding Karofsky to act “in a way that enhances public trust in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary,” the commission dismissed her complaint.

The complaint was filed in January 2021 when Karofsky informed Troupis at oral arguments on December 12, 2022: “You want us to overturn this election so that your king can stay in power, and that is so un-American.”

Despite the oversight panel’s warning, Karofsky has maintained her statements. On Saturday, she stated that she had disclosed the judicial complaint documents, renouncing her right to anonymity, in order for the investigation to be completed.” This campaign of harassment facing me and other public officials across the country, simply for standing up for the rule of law and for our democracy, must stop.”

Her lawyer also accused the commission of being bullied by “political actors” seeking to “hijack the disciplinary procedure” in order to silence Karofsky.

The filing of the case comes after a string of uncomfortable court appearances for Trump’s legal staff.

This month, a New York court rebuked Trump’s attorneys for suggesting that the Trump Organization’s litigation against state Attorney General Letitia James’ lawsuit was frivolous, telling the defense: “I don’t know how many countless pages—if I was good at math I would have been an accountant—were wasted.”

“In my 35 years of practice, I have never, never…seen a pleading with such superfluous language as the 300-page-or-so responses to the 15-page-or-so complaints,” New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron declared in response to a 306-page petition.

Then, in January, in Florida, Trump and his primary attorney, Alina Habba, were fined almost a million dollars for allegedly misusing the courts to “dishonestly push a political narrative” in his “frivolous” case against Hillary Clinton. According to District Court Judge Donald Middlebrooks’ decision, the two are “jointly and severally responsible for $9377,989.39” in addition to the $50,000 punishment he imposed in November.
