Former Donald Trump responded to calls requesting that he be nominated as Speaker of the House on Wednesday, stating that while he will do “whatever it is to help,” the party has some “great, great people.”
Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Republican from Florida, submitted a move to resign the position of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, on Monday evening. The motion was put to a vote the following day. By the time the voting was through on Tuesday evening, a final tally of 216 votes to 210 showed that McCarthy was no longer the Speaker of the House.
Since then, there have been suggestions made by certain Republicans in the House that the previous president should be considered for nomination to the office.
On Tuesday evening, a representative from Texas named Troy Nehls went to social media to announce that McCarthy “WILL NOT be running again as Speaker,” and he then nominated Trump in McCarthy’s place.

Kevin McCarthy has announced that he will NOT be running for Speaker of the House again. Nehls wrote on X, “I would like to nominate Donald J. Trump for the position of Speaker of the House.”
On Tuesday evening, Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene also resorted to social media to express her support for President Trump. She said that the only candidate for Speaker of the House that she would be supporting is the 45th president of the United States.
“The only candidate for Speaker, I am currently supporting is President Donald J. Trump…He has a proven 4-year record as President of the United States of America,” Greene posted on X. “We can make him Speaker and then elect him President! He will MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”
While Trump noted to reporters on Wednesday that he would do “whatever it is to help,” he did note that his “sole focus” is being president.”
“My sole focus is being president and, quite honestly, with actually making America great again. Because we are living in a country in decline. This is a country that is failing badly. We’re not respected in the world, interest rates are through the roof, taxes are through the roof, inflation is horrible,” Trump stated.
