Following the resignation of Representative Kevin McCarthy of California from his position as Speaker of the House, a number of Republican members of the House have suggested that President Donald Trump should fill the void left by McCarthy.
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was removed from the Speakership after a motion was filed by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., leaving an open spot to fill.
Rep. Troy Nehls, R-Texas, explained in a statement reported by The Guardian why he feels President Trump should be the next Speaker of the House. Nehls said, “This week when the US House of Representatives reconvenes, my first order of business will be to nominate Donald J. Trump for speaker of the US House of Representatives.”

Nehls added, “President Trump, the greatest president of my lifetime, has a proven record of putting America first and will make the House great again.”
Other Republicans like Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., and Greg Steube, R-Fla., agreed with Nehls in supporting President Trump as House Speaker. Fox News reported what Greene said about a potential Trump Speakership: “The only candidate for Speaker I am currently supporting is President Donald J. Trump.”
It is possible for President Trump to be a House Speaker because the law does not require House Speakers to be serving members of Congress. It is just a case of whether President Trump wants to accept the nomination as interim House Speaker, and currently, he is focusing on his run for President.
NBC News reported President Trump’s thoughts on being a House Speaker, “A lot of people have been calling me about Speaker. All I can say is we will do whatever is best for the country and other Republican Party and people.”

Trump added why he does not plan to be House Speaker, as reported by Fox News, “My sole focus is being President and, quite honestly, with actually making America great again. Because we are living in a country in decline. This is a country that is failing badly.”
Currently, potential Republican candidates for the position of House Speaker include Rep. Garret Graves, R-La., and House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y.
