Trump Claims He’s Only Guilty of Loving America Too Much
On Monday, former president Donald Trump entered a not-guilty plea to 34 felony charges, including instigating an uprising on January 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol. After the hearing, Trump said in a press conference that his only mistake was loving America too much.
“I love this country more than anyone,” Trump said. “I would do anything for this country. I would die for this country. And the only thing I’m guilty of is loving this country too much.”
Trump’s fans frequently repeat his assertion that he just loves America too much. They think Trump is a patriot who merely acted to save the nation from what they perceive to be a fraudulent and rigged election.

But according to Trump’s detractors, his actions on January 6 were driven more by a desire to maintain power than by a love of the nation. They highlight the fact that Trump encouraged his followers to march on the Capitol and made bogus allegations about the election being rigged frequently.
It is very early in the investigation against Trump, so it is unclear whether he will be found guilty of any of the allegations. His assertion that he merely loves America too much, though, is unlikely to convince many people.
