Trump asks Ga. Supreme Court to shut down election interference probe as charging decisions near.
Former President Donald Trump has requested that a criminal investigation into efforts to overturn his loss in the state of Georgia’s 2020 election be stopped by the highest court in Georgia.
On Friday, Trump’s attorneys filed motions in two Georgia courts asking for the dismissal of a special grand jury report and the disqualification of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from looking into Trump.
The petitions claim that Willis has “violated” Trump’s rights and that her probe is “politically motivated.” Additionally, they contend that the special grand jury was unjustly appointed.
The petitions have not yet received a response from Willis’ office.
The lawsuit comes as Willis is getting ready to decide whether to charge Trump and his supporters. Willis has already been advised by the special grand jury to consider indicting Trump for a number of offenses, including election meddling, soliciting election fraud, and conspiracy to commit election fraud.
Whether the Georgia Supreme Court will take up Trump’s requests is currently unknown. But if the case is heard by the court, that might have a big effect on the inquiry.

The filing is the most recent legal defense against Trump’s attempts to invalidate the outcomes of the 2020 election. Several states have also filed lawsuits against Trump for his involvement in the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, including New York and Georgia.
It is unknown whether Trump will face any criminal charges in connection with his attempts to rig the election. The complaint in Georgia, though, is evidence that the probe is continuing and that Trump might suffer major repercussions.
